Lesotho South

... is a region of Lesotho in South Africa.

This Southern part of the country is way off the beaten track and very little visited.

The northwest corner sees a continuation of the more heavily populated farmlands of the Maseru South area, with major towns at Mafeteng, Mohale's Hoek and Quthing. Apart from some gentler walking trails and dinosaur footprints there is generally less to interest the visitor, although the three border crossings into South Africa do mean that the area at least seems some through traffic.

The remainder of the area is wild mountainous area, passage through which is a real adventure, but where there are few accommodation options of any renown. Significantly these highlands are the source of the extremely important Orange River, which flows from here 1300km west through the otherwise dry Great Karoo to the Atlantic.

It is in theory possible to get through from Qacha's Nek to the east and Semonkong to the north, although the roads are real dirt backtracks.
