Upsides ...

This very simple little lodge is remotely situated to the north of Mafia. It is very untouristic up here and the lodge is pleasantly simple. A good range of activities includes very natural and relaxed cultural interaction.

A few words about prices ...

We are specialists in helping our guests to build the very best and most suitable safaris for the lowest possible prices. A safari can be a very expensive undertaking and we always do everything we can to meet your target budget.

Further up this page you will see our guide price for this place. This is the high season rate per person per night sharing a double room. For most people this should represent a worst case scenario, since various discounts usually apply at other times of year.

We guarantee that the prices we charge will be the same or, more often than not, considerably less than if you were to book directly with the owner. We also guarantee to match or beat any legitimate competitive quotations. Additionally, all our itineraries have fully itemised pricing, so that you can see exactly how much each element costs, which should provide you with great reassurance and help you to make decisions when fine-tuning your trip.

How we like to use this lodge in trips ...

We tend to recommend Mafia Island to guests who are particularly keen to avoid the main flow of visitor traffic to Zanzibar. The island offers more of a 'marine safari' than a beach break, so is best suited to an active and more outdoorsy type of traveller. If you need to lie on a lovely white-sand beach, then you need to look elsewhere. But if you can live without, then you will reap the rewards here on Mafia.

Mafia Island may be relatively quiet, yet the guests that do visit tend to cluster around the Chole Bay area, sometimes making the island seem more busy that it should be. Lua Cheia is a world apart. There are very few visitors passing through this remote northern part of Mafia, this is the place to come if you really want to get off the beaten track.

The facilities are simple, but if you are suitably outdoorsy and adventurous then you should get a kick out of the place.

Lua Cheia is most commonly combined with Kinasi Lodge in the Chole Bay area, since the two are under the same ownership, but we think that tonally it probably fits slightly better with the quirky but ore pricey Chole Mjini Lodge or the similarly priced Shamba Kilole Lodge. Maybe share 5-7 nights between the two. A couple of nights longer if you want to make it a triple header and also stay at Butiama Beach over by the whale sharks at Kilindoni.

If you can also afford to add some nights on Fanjove Island, then we really are starting to reach some kind of perfection.

These beach areas are commonly combined with safari areas such as Serengeti, Ngorongoro, Ruaha and Selous, as well as treks on Mount Kilimanjaro, usually in trips of 10 to 21 nights.
