Machame Village

...

... is a fair sized village which backs up against the southern slopes of Mount Kilimanjaro in Tanzania Northeast.

How we like to include this area in trips ...

These days the Mount Kilimanjaro Machame Route treks are amongst the main high-volume low-quality options on the mountain and we generally try to avoid offering them. We therefore very rarely use any of the accommodation in this area.

Makoa Farm ... is a pleasant German-owned farmstead at the foot of the village which specialises in lower cost horse-riding.

Protea Aishi Machame ... is the main hotel in the village, a relatively simple but reliable operation.

For higher quality routes on the west of the mountain ... Mount Kilimanjaro Shira Route treks and Mount Kilimanjaro Lemosho Route treks ... we prefer to base trekkers at one of the higher quality lodges in Arusha.

For the higher quality route on the east of the mountain ... Mount Kilimanjaro Rongai Route treks ... we use one of the hotels in Marangu Village as a base.

Many trekkers also spend time in the adjacent Tanzania North region, including Serengeti safari, Ngorongoro safari, Tarangire safari and Lake Manyara safari.

Some visitors also combine with options further afield including Ruaha safari and Selous safari to the south of the country, Katavi safari and Mahale Mountains chimpanzee safari out west, Maasai Mara safari over the border in Kenya and Virunga Mountains gorilla safari over in Rwanda.

These mainland areas are also commonly combined with nights down on the Tanzania Coast, especially on Zanzibar Island, Pemba Island, Mafia Island or Fanjove Island, usually in trips of 10 to 21 nights.
