Madagascar South

... is a large region of the island of Madagascar.

The main overland route that visitors take through Madagascar is the RN7 which leads south from the capital Antananarivo and through the central highlands before turning southeast.

Whilst traversing the country the main stopping off place around Isalo national reserve, a landscape of rugged mountains and deciduous forests.

The main road hits the southwest coast at the city of Tulear, from which visitors turn North towards Morombe or South towards Cap Sainte Marie to reach the various beach lodges and dive bases.

The vast majority of visitors then fly back to the capital.

The southeast corner of the country, centred on the town of Fort Dauphin, is completely separated from this circuit, largely due to poor road infrastructure. So the relatively small number of visitors tend to fly in directly from the capital to visit the various spiny, deciduous and coastal forest reserves.
