is a large region of the island of Madagascar
This corner of the country is completely separated from the rest of the country due to poor road infrastructure. The practical way to get here is to fly from the capital.
The area is centred on the town of Fort Dauphin, a pleasant enough port city, notably the centre of the vast sisal growing enterprise that has destroyed vast swathes of the indigenous spiny forest flora. The town contains a few decent places to stay, should you find the need, namely La Croix du Sud
and Talinjoo Hotel
Of generally far greater interest are two related lodges in this area which are typically visited as a combination over the course of seven nights on a shared charter flight out of the capital Antananarivo
The first is Mandrare River Camp
, whose highlights include the spiny forest and dancing ring-tailed lemurs.
The second is Manafiafy Rainforest Lodge
, whose remote coastal forests provide access to animals as diverse as lemurs, chameleons and hump-back whales.
