Makalali Mkhiwa Camp
is located in the Makalali Reserve
in the Kruger Private Reserves
area in the Northeast
of South Africa
Situated on the banks of a seasonal river to the west of the reserve are four small camps which are together known as Makalali Lodge. This particular option, Makalali Mkhiwa Camp, is in a funky adobe African style and features six luxury guest suites centred around relatively elegant little public areas.
Activities are centred on vehicle safari and walking safari, a range of spa treatments, plus the option for baths and sleep-outs out in the bush. Wildlife viewing in this Makalali area is reasonably reliable year round, since it is fully fenced. Further activities include team-building events and tribal drumming lessons. There are also specialist guides for children.
The main potential downsides relate to this Makalali Reserve, which is fully fenced and very much detached from the rest of Kruger. We also find that the proximity of overhead telephone cables and road signs do detract significantly from the sense of wilderness, although that is true of most parts of Kruger. The safari guiding here can sometimes be rather weak and the prices are relatively high.
As with all lodges in the area, there is the potential for adverse weather conditions Nov/Mar. Also, as with almost all the lodges in this area, different groups of guests are joined together on safari activities, unless you pre-book a private vehicle at significant additional cost.
