Set amongst villages in beautiful foothills, this place is the country's leading pony-trekking location. Originally a 1905 trading post, the Jones family run an extremely tidy operation here, with rooms ranging from decent chalets to simple backpacker dorms, plus a lively restaurant and bar.
Activities include hiking, pony-trekking, cultural visits, village stays, waterfalls and bushman rock-art.
Malealea Lodge is a very well-established option and is one of very few reliable options in the country, although it's success means that it is often busy with large tour groups.
If you are looking for a higher quality and more remote option then it might be worth comparing this with Maliba Mountain Lodge
