Marangu Village
is a large village which backs up against the lower slopes of Mount Kilimanjaro, about 30 minutes by road north-east of Moshi in Tanzania Northeast.

The park gate here is the trail head and foot for the Mount Kilimanjaro Machame Route treks, the main low-quality high-volume route on the mountain, which we tend not to operate.

Much more interestingly, the gate also acts as the registration point for the far more interesting Mount Kilimanjaro Rongai Route treks, which means that trekkers need to stay here in Marangu the previous night in order to register, before driving around to the trail foot in the remote north-east.

For guests undertaking Mount Kilimanjaro Rongai Route treks we use one of the hotels here in the village as a base ...

Kilimanjaro Mountain Resort ... is a pretty ordinary hotel, but the best in the village and our primary base trekking.

We tend to stay here for 1 to 2 nights before and 1 night after the trek.

For higher quality routes on the west of the mountain ... Mount Kilimanjaro Shira Route treks and Mount Kilimanjaro Lemosho Route treks ... we prefer to base trekkers at one of the higher quality lodges in Arusha.

Many trekkers also spend time in the adjacent Tanzania North region, including Serengeti safari, Ngorongoro safari, Tarangire safari and Lake Manyara safari.

Some visitors also combine with options further afield including Ruaha safari and Selous safari to the south of the country, Katavi safari and Mahale Mountains chimpanzee safari out west, Maasai Mara safari over the border in Kenya and Virunga Mountains gorilla safari over in Rwanda.

These mainland areas are also commonly combined with nights down on the Tanzania Coast, especially on Zanzibar Island, Pemba Island, Mafia Island or Fanjove Island, usually in trips of 10 to 21 nights.
