The Mara is one of the best known and most iconic safari areas in Africa. It is an absolutely beautiful area, with a great climate and is extremely rich in wildlife, most notably the migration herds which are usually in residence during Jul/Oct. The reserve is easily accessed by air from Nairobi, there is a vast range of accommodation options, including some really top lodges and camps. The main reserve is surrounded by a dozen private conservancies which are far removed from the busy central areas and where a wider range of safari activities are offered.
The main potential downsides in Masai Mara are the very high levels of vehicle traffic experienced inside the main reserve, safari here is very seasonal, the very high prices, the rather commercial or dowdy nature of many of the lodges and the fact that the main migration action is out of range over the border in the Serengeti for most of the year.UpsidesDownsidesSeasonsAreas inside the main reservePrivate conservancy areasTrips
