... is the capital city of Lesotho in South Africa.

Founded by the British in 1869 as a centre for administration and tax collection, the old town centre still contains a number of old sandstone buildings, but is dominated by more modern development.

Even more noticeable are the huge shanty towns which encircle the old town, created by the rural poor trying to seek a better life in the city.

Maseru is a pleasant enough city, relatively safe to walk around during the day, but not somewhere with sufficient attractions to lure most visitors into stopping overnight.

The main accommodation is in resort-style casino hotels datng back to the prohibition days of the Apartheid era.
