... is located in the Northern region of Madagascar.

Masoala Forest Reserve is one of the largest remaining areas of pristine rainforest remaining in the country and is reckoned to host more species than any other area.

Set on a peninsular on the northeast coast, the protected forest covers an impressive 2300 square kilometres, fringed by beautiful tropical beaches and surrounded by beautiful coral lagoons.

It should be noted that the whole peninsular is not protected and unforunately significant clearing of forests is still taking place around the periphery.

Amongst a cluster of lodges in the Tampolo area to the west of the peninsular the best are undoubtedly Masoala Forest Lodge and Le Petit Relais Masoala.

The latter is related to Relais du Masoala in the gateway town of Maroansetra across the bay, from where it is also possible to visit the pristine island of Nosy Mangabe, which contains a wealth of wildlife including some very elusive aye-ayes.

The park authority offers various multiple day treks across the peninsular, although they are not for the faint-hearted.
