is located in the Morogoro and Uluguru
area in the southern
region of Tanzania
The road between Morogoro and Selous is long, tough, varied and scenic. It is a genuinely interesting drive, but does take 7 to 12 hours depending on conditions, making it quite an undertaking in a single day.
Around the half way point, a stone cross marks a small turning which leads, remarkably, to an old German mission station, complete with cathedral.
Compared with other missions we have visited, this place is actually in reasonable condition and operating well under the stewardship of the excellent Father Alfred Sowa.
Spending the night here is quite an experience. The rooms are authentic but simple and the shared ablutions are at least functional. But the highlight is time spent with the Father and his staff, both at the mission and around the village. We usually bring along a cook, supplies and mosquito nets.
Matombo Mission offers the chance of a really authentic and unusual African experience.
