Mauritius

...

... is a substantial island set in a very remote part of the Indian Ocean to the east of Madagascar.

Remarkably Mauritius lies some 1700km off the coast of Africa, around 3000km from both Johannesburg in South Africa and Nairobi in Kenya, with which it most commonly connected by air.

The island is around 50km in diameter and contains a blend of dramatic forested peaks and rich agriculture, fringed by classic tropical beaches.

Despite its remoteness Mauritius is one of the most heavily touristed islands in the world, with literally hundreds of hotels lining its beaches, at least fifty of which are enormous resorts with hundreds of rooms. This is not a place for the intrepid traveller, it is somewhere to come to enjoy a tropical climate in lavish comfort, with some golf and tennis mixed in.

Mauritius is not somewhere we have historically recommended a great deal over the years, it is very far removed from the core safari areas of Africa, both geographically and tonally. The vast majority of our guests are usually better advised to seek out the lower key beach locations on the coasts of Kenya, Tanzania and Mozambique. But there are certainly times when Mauritius is the best solution, especially for guests who specifically want that all-inclusive type of resort or who are specifically interested in playing golf.

The island is usually accessed from either Nairobi or Johannesburg on long-haul flights of around 6 hours duration. An overnight stop is often needed in those cities when combining with most safari areas, making this a relatively arduous connection.

The vast majority of visitors tend to stay in one or two lodges on the island for a total of 7 to 14 nights.

Amongst the best golf resorts are Constance Belle Mare Plage, Beachcomber Dinarobin Hotel, Beachcomber Paradis Hotel, Heritage Awali, Heritage Le Telfair, Four Seasons at Anahita and Le Touessrok.

Amongst the best of the larger resorts are Constance Le Prince Maurice, Lux Le Morne, Maratim Hotel Mauritius, Sugar Beach Resort, The Oberoi Mauritius and The Residence Mauritius.

Amongst the best smaller hotels are 20 Degrees Sud, Baystone Hotel and the inland Lakaz Chamarel.

Mauritius can be combined with virtually any safari area on the African mainland, although connections are not necessarily easy or convenient.
