McGregor and Robertson
are two small towns situated in the Overberg
area of the Western Cape
of South Africa
McGregor is a real gem of a place, situated on the old Vortrekker route through the mountains from the coast and previously known as the primary source of whipstocks for the Cape Colony. But the old road fell into disuse many years ago, leaving the village virtually cut off from the outside world.
These days McGregor is a beautifully preserved and sleepy village which offers guests a real sense of peace, as well as whole host of activities including hiking, mountain-biking, horse-riding and tours of the local vineyards. The most interesting accommodation is at the rather extraordinary Temenos Retreat
Robertson is a much larger settlement down on the main R60, a major wine producing centre, but a rather less attractive as a place to stay. For guests wanting to visit the wineries of the Robertson area we usually recommend one of the lodges in the Montagu
area a little further to the east.
