is located in the Watamu
area of the Kenya Coast
Unlike nearby Malindi
, Watamu itself is much more of a village than a town, with a scattering of small shops and a reasonably hassle free environment. The coast is largely lined by sweeping white sand beaches, whilst just to the south lies the scenic Mida Creek with its mysterious mangrove forests. Offshore lies an extensive system of reefs, which provide some of the best diving in the region.
Until relatively recently Watamu was considered to be a place to avoid the crowds, with a large number of private house rentals providing pleasantly low key accommodation. But in recent years there has been considerable development and the place now has its share of large beach resorts, almost all of which are offering very low rates in an attempt to attract visitors.
Situated on the busy main beach just south of the town, Medina Palms is a relatively upmarket resort with a wide range of facilities centred on a very long and impressive swimming pool. Guest accommodation is in around 80 well presented rooms.
Activities include diving, snorkelling, inter-tidal walks, spa treatments and visits to various historic sites in the area.
The main potential downsides are the aforementioned shortcomings of the area, the fact that the resort is in a busy area, squeezed into a very small plot and hemmed in by large resorts either side, plus our feeling that certain aspects of the design are slightly deficit.
