Kilimanjaro Shira Route
approaches the mountain from the west, summits from Barafu Camp and descends via the Mweka Trail to the southeast.
It is considered to be one of the classic routes on Kilimanjaro, with an excellent range of scenery, some really interesting route variants, the possibility of excellent altitude acclimatisation, chances for good traffic avoidance and high summit success rates.
This trail offers the best best seven night options on the mountain, but these are slightly surpassed by the Lemosho 8Bp
eight night route.
Recommended Shira Route trek variant ...Shira 7Bp
... is a non-technical seven night private trek on this route, one of our most popular options. It uses a very unusual variant on the routing, first pioneered by us in 2009, by which it manages to avoid major traffic for almost the whole of the first five days on any day of the year. It has an extraordinary summit success rate of 94% and exceptional traffic avoidance, especially for departures Mon/Tue/Wed. The price range is USD 2500-4400 depending on the specification level and the number of trekkers.
Other Shira Route trek variant ...Shira 7A
... is an apparently very similar trek to the one above, but using the standard routing, which leads to lesser altitude acclimatisation, a lower summit success rate of 87% and much greater exposure to traffic. Only tends to be used for trekkers with very specific needs.
