Kilimanjaro Shira Route treks
follow a 6, 7 or 8 night trail which approaches the mountain from the west and represent some of the very best longer options on the mountain.
We believe that the seven night treks on this trail are the best non-technical options for trekkers who are very confident about their fitness and ability to cope with the rigors of sleeping out on the mountain.
The Shira Trail is often compared with the Lemosho Trail
, which also starts on the western side and uses the same summit approach. The main difference is that Shira starts a great deal higher up, which bypasses the scenic forest zone, but provides for improved altitude acclimatisation and traffic avoidance.
In fact the better variants on this route is second to none in terms of altitude acclimatisation, with excellent afternoon walks on days 2, 3 and 4 getting trekkers up to Shira Cathedral, the Lent Hills and Arrow Glacier respectively, returning to lower altitudes to sleep.
The route offers the highest chance summit success, largely due to this excellent acclimatisation, but also because these longer treks tend to attract a fitter and more committed type of trekker.
