Mount Meru Game Lodge and Sanctuary
is located in the Arusha
area in the northern
region of Tanzania
Set alongside the main Moshi to Arusha highway 20km to the east of town, this lodge has been there for as long as we can remember, apparently since 1959.
It offers reasonable mid-range accommodation on an extremely large plot and the location is convenient for Kilimanjaro International Airport.
The novelty attraction is that the place is also a wildlife sanctuary, taking in orphaned and injured animals, which guests can view at close quarters. Zebras, warthogs, ostriches and various other birds wander the lawns.
The style is essentially colonial, with public areas contained within an historic central bungalow and 17 comfortable guest cottages dotted amongst the trees.
It is now part of the modest Intimate Places
portfolio. Although the new management has modernised to an extent, Mount Meru Game Lodge and Sanctuary remains essentially an old-fashioned type of place which tends to appeal more to more mature travellers and families whose children might enjoy the animals.
The service levels can be a little variable.
