is the most southerly region of Mozambique
, extending over around 450km down to the border with South Africa.
The main draw of this area is that it contains the nearest and most accessible tropical coastline for the countries of Southern Africa and is therefore often combined with the key safari areas of Botswana, Namibia, South Africa, Zambia and Zimbabwe.
We divide the region into four areas ...Bazaruto
... is by far the most interesting area for the majority of international visitors since it contains some wonderful tropical beaches and islands with a number of high quality beach lodges and it is easily accessible with direct flights from Johannesburg and Kruger.Inhambane
... is another area of tropical beaches, also with some excellent diving, but where the lodges tend to be simpler and more focussed on the South African self-drive market.Maputo
... is the most southerly section of the coast, running down to the border with South Africa and containing both the capital city and a number of beach areas, one of which contains one high-end beach lodge.Limpopo Reserve
... is an enormous 10,000 sq km reserve which shares a 200km border with Kruger, but which is only in the early stages of developing significant visitor facilities.
