is located in the Lake Victoria North
area of southwest Uganda
Situated out in the Lake Victoria, some 25km southwest of Entebbe, this 40 hectare island is home to a chimpanzee sanctuary, where around 40 orphaned and confiscated animals have been brought to live out their days.
Guests are restricted to a small corner of the island, with chimp viewing from a raised platform along an electrified fence.
For a much larger fee guests can be care-giver for the day or accompany the baby chimps on a walk through the forest, although these activities both require stringent medical procedures and form-filling to reduce the risk of transmission of human disease to the chimps.
Visits can be half day, full day or overnight, there being four large guest tents with private bathrooms. The boat ride from Entebbe takes about an hour each way.Ngamba Island
can make for a decent trip if you have time to kill in Entebbe
, but it is not to be compared with tracking wild chimpanzees in locations such as Kibale Forest
