North Namib
is a vast stretch of desert which lies alongside the Namib National Park to the north of the better known Sossusvlei area in Southwest Namibia.

The area is very lightly populated and contains some stunning desert scenery.

By far the most exciting option in this area are the fabulous Namib Desert Expeditions, three night guided overland trips which we operate into the sand sea and down to the diamond mining ghost towns, shipwrecks and seal colonies of the coast.

The southern part of this area is dominated by a number of larger lodges which sell themselves as bases from which to visit Sossusvlei, despite the rather obvious disadvantage of being so far away from the park entrance.

Of more immediate interest, the Naukluft Mountains are laced with deep canyons with hidden waterholes, quivertree forests and some reasonable wildlife. A good area for hiking and horse-riding ...

Bullsport Guest Farm ... is perhaps the best of the rather simple accommodation options in this Naukluft area.

The characterful settlement of Solitaire is the only place to stock up on fuel and supplies in the region, so is something of an obligatory stop. There is also an excellent bakery here, which should not be missed, a slice of apple pie makes for a sneaky second breakfast for drivers heading north.

To the north the most interesting feature is the Kuiseb Canyon, a considerable geological feature whose river, remarkably often runs through this desert year round. The area was made famous by the fantastic book "The Sheltering Desert", in which two German geologists hole up here for most of the second world war ...

Rostock Ritz ... is a rather quirky lodge which is most commonly used to break the long journey north towards Swakopmund, but also offers hiking amidst some superb scenery.

Wustenquell ... is a simple lodge further to the north and considerably more remote, in an area renowned for its unusual wind-blown rock formations.

We very rarely find ourselves recommending the lodges in this area. With the vast majority of visitors being primarily focussed on Sossusvlei, there is rarely space in a trip to also spend nights here.

The main exception is for repeat visitors to Namibia who are specifically seeking out unusual locations and spending more time exploring the greater area.

The North Namib is most commonly combined in trips with other popular locations around the country such as Fish River Canyon, Luderitz, Sossusvlei, Swakopmund, Twyfelfontein and Etosha.
