The Northwest Province
of South Africa is a relatively little-visited part of the country, consisting largely of broad empty and arid semi-desert landscapes.

Tswalu Game Reserve ... is the undoubted highlight of the region, a wonderful and enormous private area of the Kalahari which offers perhaps the best non-malarial safari on the continent in two very high-end lodges.

Kgalagadi South National Park ... is a similarly remote, wild and wonderful reserve, but this time best suited to tough independent self-drivers heading north along the testing backtracks through the Kalahari Desert areas of Botswana and Namibia.

Augrabies Falls ... is a relatively impressive waterfall on the Orange River, a spectacle not to be missed if you happen to be passing though.

Namaqualand North ... is a large and disparate area of semi-desert which is best known for the extraordinary displays of wildflowers August to September.

Richtersveld ... is an area of extraordinary desert scenery running down to the southern part of the Diamond Coast and also the location for some excellent white water-rafting along on the Orange River, which forms the border with Namibia.
