Nosy Be
is the largest of a cluster of tropical islands off the northwest coast in the Northern region of Madagascar.

The area has most of the ingredients of the classical image of paradise, with tropical forests full of rare endemic species, palm plantations and superb coral reefs. However it is not well known for its beaches, which are not generally of great quality.

The island of Nosy Be itself is by far the most commonly visited coastal area in the country and is dominated by Italian packaged holiday charter flights and their associated resorts. It therefore has a very different tone to tourism on the rest of Madagascar, a lot more mass-market. Most safari travellers therefore tend to avoid the place. However there are a few decent accommodation options on the island, notably Manga Soa Lodge.

The much quieter island of Nosy Komba immediately to the south of Nosy Be has some really nice options, headed by the luxurious Tsara Komba Lodge.

Another small island, Nosy Sakatia, this time immediately to the west of Nosy Be, is home to the relatively simpler Sakatia Lodge, which is well known for its excellent dive operation.

Further off the northwest is the relatively upmarket private island resort of Constance Tsarabanjina Lodge.

Over on the mainland coast is the excellent and very environmentally tuned Eden Lodge.
