is located in the Eastern
region of Madagascar
Also commonly referred to by its French colonial name Ile Sainte Marie, is a large elongated island off the northeast coast and measures 50km long by 5km wide, with the much smaller Ile des Nattes lying off the southern tip.
Both islands are comprised of low hills covered by luxuriant tropical vegetation, with some significant areas of agriculture. Endless sandy beaches are backed by palm trees and fringed by beautiful shallow lagoons and coral reefs.
There is a significant local population, mainly concentrated in the southwest of the main island.
Although there are lots of lodges here, most are small and low key, many are locally owned. There is a notable absence of large and unsightly tourist developments.
The best accommodation is undoubtedly the relatively upmarket Princess Bora Lodge
