Nxai Xini Pan Bivouac

... is located in the Makgadikgadi Pans area of central Botswana.

This small waterhole, which is situated to the north of the main Maun to Nata road, has served as a valuable resource for local wildlife for millennia, as clearly demonstrated by the fossilised prints and stone tools to be found there.

Travelling up by vehicle, usually in the late afternoon, you arrive in time to conceal yourself behind a set of Bushman hides, ready for elephants and other wildlife to come to water. If you are lucky enough to get good sightings, which is not uncommon, then this can be a really deep and hypnotic experience, just you and the wildlife out on the vast open plains.

At last light you retreat to a small bivouac camp, to sleep in bedrolls around a campfire There is also a table and chairs for dining and rudimentary toilet facilities. Next morning, check for wildlife at the waterhole, have breakfast and depart.

Obviously there is always a certain risk that there will be a shortage of animals on the particular day that you are camped at the waterhole, although owner Ralph assures us that this is very rarely the case.

Additionally some guests may find this simple bivouac camp to be rather too basic.
