Oceana Beach
is located in the Sunshine Coast area of the Eastern Cape region of South Africa.

+ small private reserve
+ important conservation project
+ stunning landscapes
+ high quality lodge
+ high service levels
+ great food
+ good range of activities
+ excellent wellness centre
+ extremely child friendly

Situated 10km east of Port Alfred, this very upmarket lodge is set in a small but beautiful private reserve of undulating grassy hill and vegetated coastal dunes, leading down to a wild sandy beach.

The lodge is centred on a very pleasant main building with bar, lounge and restaurant, with a games room and three guest rooms below. Behind there is an extensive gym and spa and a pretty but slightly disappointing pool area. The four ocean suites are really lovely, as is the three bedroom house for larger groups. Service and food are exceptional.

Activities include gentle vehicle safari through the reserve, which contains a limited selection of wildlife, including rhinos. But for us the highlight are walks down to the beach, where there is a nice lounge area ideal for delicious picnic lunches.

- fenced reserve
- proximity to human habitation
- rather tame and over-managed
- lack of wildlife
- very expensive

Oceana Beach and Wildlife Reserve is undoubtedly a top quality lodge, as indeed it should be at the price. The main downside is the lack of activities, which tends to limit stays to 2 or 3 nights, although longer is great if you really want to relax.
