Okavango Moremi Mopane Tongue
is a sector of Moremi National Park located to the northwest of the Okavango Delta in northern Botswana.

The the vast majority of the Okavango Delta is divided into enormous and wonderful private concession areas which are typically operated by a single safari company and are accessible only by light aircraft, offering pure and very high quality safari experiences.

This Moremi Mopane Tongue area is the exception, it is largely a public access area and takes the full load of self-drive and budget overland traffic, so it is much more busy and generally much lower quality, although some of the lodges are slightly lower cost than in the prime private areas.

At the western tip of the tongue, three lodges are literally backed up against each other in three adjacent plots, along with a range of public and private camp-sites.

Camp Okuti ... is the smallest and most elegant of the three lodges in this location, with an unusual dome-thatch design. It also happens to be the lower cost of the three.

Xakanaxa Camp ... is a more conventional tented camp, but really rather pleasant, if a little pricey for the location.

Camp Moremi ... is the most substantial of the three properties and also has its strengths, but also seems to be a little pricey for the location.

Unusually for Botswana there is actually a human settlement to the northeast of this area, with Khwai village straddling the main sandy transit road between Maun and Kasane. It contains some modest and relatively lower cost accommodation options aimed primarily at the overland traffic.

Sango Safari Camp ... is a much simpler and lower cost option set very close to the village and run by the local community.

To the east of the village and airstrip there are several camps situated in small private plots along the north bank of the Khwai River, where the landscape is a lovely blend of riverine forest and open grasslands, backing onto the mopane forest. The area is usually very strong for wildlife, notably in the Jun/Oct dry season, but the compromise is the slightly greater exposure to safari traffic, especially if you venture out onto the main transit road or the adjacent Moremi National Park ...

Machaba Camp ... is a really nice little place, very well presented and serviced. Although relatively pricey for this area, it does represent a considerable saving from most of the camps out in the prime private delta concessions.

Little Machaba Camp ... is a smaller annex of the above camp and slightly higher in price.

Khwai Tented Camp ... is very pleasant option, also renowned for the quality of its safari guiding, but a rather simpler in build and closer to the village and airstrip.

Khwai River Lodge ... is a much larger and rather old-fashioned lodge which somehow manages to command premium prices despite the clear disadvantages of its position.
