is located in the Laikipia South
area of north-central Kenya
Set on a private ranch some 50km north-east of the town of Nanyuki, this is a very high-end lodge forms a centre-piece for the owner's unique vision of conservation for the region.
The lodge itself is set at the base of a prominent kopje on the arid plains of the Laikipia Plateau. It comprises lavish public areas, centred on a resort style swimming pool which has been landscaped to make it look like it is in the tropics. Guest accommodation is in several sumptuous detached stone cottages under thatch, for up to fourteen guests. There is also a spa, gym, wine cellar and business facilities. Service levels are to the highest standards, notably including a European chef.
Activities include vehicle safari, walking safari, horse-back safari, off-road driving courses, yoga, tennis and visits to the lodge's own animal rescue and rehabilitation centre, as well as helicopter trips to Mount Kenya, the lakes of the Rift Valley and the remote deserts of the north.
The main potential downsides are the extremely high prices, the fact that some aspects of the lodge design might not be to everyone's taste and the relatively low wildlife densities. We are also still to be convinced about the environmental credentials and the authenticity of the safari experience, as it says in one review ... "Ol Jogi is such a wonderful place, with the polar bear, the trumpet playing elephant and all the wild animals. It is a great place for relaxation in the wild."
