Ol Pejeta House
is located in the Laikipia South
area of north-central Kenya
Ol Pejeta is a 400 square kilometre fenced wildlife conservancy which forms part of a critical buffer zone between the heavily populated arable farmland of central regions and the wilder rangs to the north.
Situated in the heart of the conservancy, this house was the private residence of infamous arms dealer Adnan Khashoggi. It is a fabulous example of 1970's kitsch and post-colonial excess. The parties that took place here back in the day are legendary.
These days the house is operated by Serena as a lodge, with several guest rooms in the main building and more recent ones added in the garden, where there is also a pool and tennis court.
Activities include vehicle safari inside the conservancy, plus visits to the chimpanzee and rhino sanctuaries.
The main potential downsides are that Ol Pejeta is a fully fenced reserve, with human habitation and the town of Nanyuki in close proximity. The reserve is rather tame and over-managed and suffers from high visitor traffic, although it is more quiet on the western side. The chimpanzee sanctuary here is particularly poor. The house itself is definitely not to everyone's taste.
