Paraa Safari Lodge

...

... is located in the Murchison Falls area of western Uganda.

Murchison Falls National Park forms a major part of the very substantial 5,308 square kilometres Murchison Falls Conservation Area, which contains a wide range of forest, savanna and riverine landscapes and is particularly pretty in parts. Despite heavy poaching during the 1980's, this very scenic area has now recovered to provide some decent wildlife, with lions and elephants being the main attraction.

The falls themselves are located on the Victoria Nile, 35km upstream from Lake Albert. From here the Albert Nile leaves the lake on its 3500km journey to the Mediterranean.

Set on the north bank of the Victoria Nile in the heart of the reserve, close to the main river crossing, this large lodge enjoys broad views across the park.

The lodge itself is very heavily constructed and rather old-fashioned, with cavernous public areas, a huge swimming pool with swim-up bar, backed by around 40 functional rooms in two storey blocks.

The number one activity in the area is to take a motorboat safari up the Victoria Nile to the base of the falls, where hippos, crocodiles, buffaloes, antelopes and a range of bird-life can usually be seen. It is also possible to approach the top of the falls by vehicle and walk to a prominent viewpoint.

Boat trips downstream towards the delta at Lake Albert, can also be very rewarding and offer good chances of rare shoebill storks.

The main savanna area for vehicle safari lies between the Victoria Nile and the Albert Nile and is accessed by means of a motorised pontoon.

To the south the Budongo Forest provides an alternative to Kibale Forest as a chimpanzee tracking location.

The big negative here is that they do not offer safari services. So the place is only suitable for overland traffic and cannot service fly-in guests.
