Phinda is a 230 square kilometre private reserve which covers a range of habitats including mountain forests, savanna and vegetated coastal dunes. It contains a full range of wildlife and is considered to be one of the leading private game reserves on the continent.
Phinda Homestead is set in a wooded valley to the southwest of the reserve. It is essentially a single very high quality house comprising four guests suites and intimate public areas including a swimming pool which doubles up as popular drinking stop for the local elephants. The lodge can only be rented in its entirety for groups of up to eight guests, so is great for a group in search of privacy and quality.
An unusually broad range of activities includes vehicle safari, walking safari and night vehicle safari inside the reserve, with motorboat safari and canoe safari on the nearby Mzinene River and visits to local Zulu villages. Day trips down to the coast can also be arranged for diving and snorkelling, although these are paid extras.
The main potential downsides at Phinda Homestead are that the reserve itself is fenced, traversed by a public access road and quite busy with safari vehicles. The fact that guests can self-drive right up to the lodge also detracts from the sense of wilderness. There is the potential for adverse weather conditions Dec/Apr. The lodge is the lowest cost option on the reserve, especially if you have a group of the perfect size to fill it.SeasonsPrices
