Phinda Rock Lodge
is located in the Phinda Mkhuze
area of the Natal Northeast
region of Natal
in South Africa
Phinda is a 230 square kilometre private reserve which covers a range of habitats including mountain forests, savanna and vegetated coastal dunes. It contains a full range of wildlife and is considered to be one of the leading private game reserves on the continent.
Phinda Rock Lodge is set high up on a hillside to the southwest of the reserve. It comprises intimate adobe-style public areas, plus guest accommodation just six stylish suites, each with a private plunge pool.
An unusually broad range of activities includes vehicle safari, walking safari and night vehicle safari inside the reserve, with motorboat safari and canoe safari on the nearby Mzinene River and visits to local Zulu villages. Day trips down to the coast can also be arranged for diving and snorkelling, although these are paid extras.
The main potential downsides at Phinda Rock Lodge are that the reserve itself is fenced, traversed by a public access road and quite busy with safari vehicles. The fact that guests can self-drive right up to the lodge also detracts from the sense of wilderness. There is the potential for adverse weather conditions Dec/Apr. Also, as with almost all the lodges in this area, different groups of guests are joined together on safari activities, unless you pre-book a private vehicle at significant additional cost. The lodge itself is relatively pricey, the most expensive on this reserve.SeasonsPrices
