Port Alfred

... is located on the coast around 150km east of Port Elizabeth in the Sunshine Coast East area of the Eastern Cape region of South Africa.

It is is a modest but locally significant town set around the mouth of the Kowie River.

The two main attractions here are the river itself, which is navigable for some distance, so offers opportunities for boating, canoeing and fishing, whilst out on the coast lie magnificent beaches and dunefields. The river is not suitable for large vessels, but in recent years the islands in the estuary have been developed into a reasonably attractive area of marinas and holiday homes, which now dominates the small Victorian waterfront. There is also a golf course in the western end of town.

There are some very decent guesthouses in the town, to which we have allocated relatively low ratings only because the area is generally a pretty low priority for most of our guests ...

The Residency ... is a modest guesthouse contained within an historic Victorian house set back from the ocean.

The Dockside ... is a more modern option in a suburban setting on a hillside above the town.

A Villa de Mer ... is another pleasant modern option in a suburban setting.
