Port Elizabeth

... also now known as Nelson Mandela Bay, is located 650km east of Cape Town and 700km southwest of Durban, in the Sunshine Coast West area of the Eastern Cape in South Africa.

Port Elizabeth is the largest city in the Eastern Cape, , but is perhaps not the most alluring of places for the international visitor. The place has a rather institutionalised feel, with decent beaches backed by water-parks, holiday homes and residential districts, beyond which lies a ring of heavy industry and urban highways.

However the airport is a major hub through which many of our guests are obliged to transit in order to access in the airport.

Hacklewood Hill ... is a relatively upmarket lodge in a suburb out by the airport and therefore convenient for late arrivals and early departures.

No 5 Boutique Art Hotel ... is a rather slick modern guesthouse set back a couple of blocks from the ocean in the suburb of Summerstrand.

Singa Lodge ... is a reasonably chic Asian themed lodge, also located in the Summerstrand area.

We are only asked to include Port Elizabeth in trips relatively rarely, usually because guests specifically want to tour the city or do business here.

Otherwise guests tend to more often stay at St Francis Bay, which is a much quieter and prettier seafront settlement a little further to the southwest.

When we do include the area in trips it is virtually always as part of a self-drive exploration, often starting in Cape Town, heading east through various locations in the Western Cape, to overnight here before departing from the local airport. Or vice versa.
