is located in the Natal Northeast
region of Natal
in South Africa
Although the lagoons and estuaries in this area are pretty enough, the town of Richard's Bay itself is dominated by vast industrial plants and featureless highways.
In fact the port here has been massively extended in recent decades and is now the largest in South Africa. Exports include mineral ores, coal and sugar, whilst oil and other supplies are imported for KwaZulu Natal, Gauteng and other provinces.
Richard's Bay airport is well served and acts as a hub for the region, which makes some of the lodges in the surrounding area worth considering at either end of a trip if you need to connect to late arrivals or early departures. Thula Thula Lodge
... is a modest safari option located on a private wildlife reserve around 40km inland from the town.Thula Thula Tented Camp
... is a slightly simpler accommodation option on the same reserve.
