Rio Azul Lodge
is located close to the town of Inhassoro in the Bazaruto
area in the Southern
region of Mozambique
Set on the inland side of a peninsular close to the mouth of the Govuro River estuary and with views inland over mangroves, around 80km north of Vilanculos, this a relatively high quality lodge is centred on a modest main building containing pleasant lounge and bar areas under thatch, leading out onto pleasant terraces and a small swimming pool.
Guest accommodation is in just 8 rooms, which come in two specifications ...
Beach Chalets : 6 : These rooms are relatively small in size, simple but quite elegantly presented and all with direct access onto the beach. All have a child bed which can be rolled out to make a triple.
Beach Villas : 2 : These more substantial villas have three bedrooms each, inside and outside dining areas and a deck with a private swimming pool. The villas are suitable for larger family groups of up to six adults, with three further loft bunks for children 16 and under.
Activities include fishing, kayaking, dhow sailing, nature walks, beach picnics, bird-watching, wake-boarding and wind-surfing. Guests can also explore the mangrove estuary in 'tinnies', aluminium boats with small motors.
Note that there is presently no diving on site, for that it is necessary to travel back to Vilanculos, which is would be okay for one trip, but not something you would probably want to do repeatedly.
Access is usually by air from Johannesburg
to Vilanculos, from where it is about an hour by road north.
Rio Azul Lodge is certainly one of the best lower cost options on this coastline, a wonderfully remote and relaxing place. If you want to also do some diving whilst you are in the area, then you could consider splitting your stay between here and one of the lodges down in Vilanculos, or even on of the high end options out on the islands.SeasonsPricesTrips
