is located in Pilgrims Rest
in the Panorama South
area of the Northeast
region in South Africa
+ unique hotel
+ area steeped in mining history
+ reasonable low-range accommodation
+ individually themed rooms
+ quirky bar area
This original gold-rush hotel has been well restored to provide a taste of the past. There is an decent restaurant and the fifty or so rooms area set around courtyards and decorated with reproduction Victorian furniture.
- not totally authentic
- potential noise from the road
- open to day visitors
- poor maintenance
- poor service
- high visitor traffic
- very little activities available
The most common complaints are the lack of a personable host, shortcomings in other aspects of the service, poor maintenance and the fact there really isn't anything to do around the village after everything closes at five.
Royal Hotel is definitely an interesting and thought-proving place to stay, even if it is not utterly authentic. But ultimately it is not somewhere we end up recommending for inclusion in trips very often.
