Sabi Sand West
is located in the Kruger Private Reserves
area of the Kruger National Park
in the Northeast
of South Africa
This area is a combination of private reserves which share traversing rights over around 72 square kilometres and includes just nine camps.
The reserve forms part of the western boundary of the greater Kruger
protected area, there being no fences between here and the border with Mozambique. It is however surrounded by intense informal settlements to the north and west, although the impact of these on the overall safari experience is relatively limited.
The landscape here is the usual mix of undulating hills and thick thorn-scrub, but with some more pronounced hills, modest open grasslands and pleasant riverine areas to provide variation. Although the animals are free to migrate in and out, wildlife viewing is very reliable year round.
This area contains an unusual range of camps, from extremely high end to really rather basic ...Dulini Lodge
... is a really highly rated camp, a really intimate and high quality operation with just six elegant guest suites.Exeter Leadwood Lodge
... is another really upmarket option, a chic modern design overlooking the riverbed and with just four superb guest suites with private plunge pools.Exeter River Lodge
... is another high end camps, slightly more traditional and with eight guest suites. But we have marked it down for overloading vehicles with too many guests when out on safari during high season.Ulusaba Rock Lodge
... is the best known of Sir Richard Branson's two camps here, an impressive construction on top of a prominent hill, with a total of ten rooms.Ulusaba Safari Lodge
... is the lesser known of the Branson camps here, but actually our preferred one, in a relatively traditional style and with eleven guests suites.Savanna Lodge
... is a well respected mid-priced option, which delivers reliable levels of service, but which may be a little too close to civilisation for some people.
