Sarara Tented Camp
is located in the Mathews Range
area of north-central Kenya
Remotely situated on the eastern side of the Mathews Range of mountains, this camp is the main focus of the huge 750 square kilometres Namunyak Conservancy, a very successful venture generating revenue for local people and encouraging them to protect their unique wildlife.
Sarara Tented Camp is undoubtedly one of the most interesting and alluring lodges in the country, passionately run by the Bastard family. This place is very remote, there are no other vehicles, no other tourists, it is effectively a private wilderness.
The camp itself is extremely comfortable, with rustic chic public areas leading out onto a lovely swimming pool and guest accommodation in just five luxury suites.
Activities are centred on vehicle safaris, walking safaris, camel treks and mountain hiking, with the potential for some unusual sightings such as caracals, gerenuks, reticulated giraffes and imperial zebras. Superb cultural interaction with the local Samburu people includes visits to the famous Singing Wells. It is also possible to charter the camp plane to explore the remote regions north towards Lake Turkana, with options to bivouac camp in the most wild and remote spots.
The main potential downsides are the relatively high costs of the lodge and the fact that this area has much lower wildlife densities that more conventional safari locations.PricesTrips
