Saruni Samburu Camp

... is located just north of Samburu National Park in the Central Region of Kenya.

On the upside ...

This is one of the best options in the region, a fabulously innovative hilltop lodge in a huge private conservancy, but also offering access to the nearby Samburu Reserve. High quality vehicle safari, walking safari and cultural interactions are offered, with each group of guests usually being catered for privately rather than being asked to share vehicles.

On the downside ...

The main potential downsides include the fact that the camp is expensive, that there can be very low wildlife densities inside the conservancy during the dry season and that there can be very heavy visitor traffic in the nearby Samburu Reserve.

When to visit ...

Samburu has a very unusual climate compared with most other safari areas, being generally very arid but with two very pronounced rainy seasons in April and November ...

Jun/Oct ... is the classic time to visit Samburu, the height of the dry season and the period during which there should be the best wildlife viewing along the river, although it is also the time at which visitor numbers peak.

Nov ... is can be a month of very high rainfall, although these rains can fail completely.

Dec/Mar ... is the period between the two main rainy months, when rainfall is usually quite low, but when wildlife viewing can vary in quality, largely depending on the amount of rain in the preceding November.

Apr ... is can be a month of very high rainfall.

A few words about prices ...

We are specialists in helping our guests to build the very best and most suitable safaris for the lowest possible prices. A safari can be a very expensive undertaking and we always do everything we can to meet your target budget.

Further up this page you will see our guide price for this place. This is the high season rate per person per night sharing a double room. For most people this should represent a worst case scenario, since various discounts usually apply at other times of year.

We guarantee that the prices we charge will be the same or, more often than not, considerably less than if you were to book directly with the owner. We also guarantee to match or beat any legitimate competitive quotations. Additionally, all our itineraries have fully itemised pricing, so that you can see exactly how much each element costs, which should provide you with great reassurance and help you to make decisions when fine-tuning your trip.

How we like to include this lodge in trips ...

Usually we would look to avoid areas which are so busy with budget safari traffic, but Samburu is such an unusual and beautiful location that we often find ourselves looking for ways to avoid these issues and include it in trips.

Saruni Samburu Camp solves the problem almost completely with its wonderful remote location. We absolutely love the atmosphere of this particular part of the world, the desert landscapes contrasting with the rich riverine flora. This really is somewhere that virtually all experienced safari travellers would appreciate.

The usual stay duration is 3 to 4 nights.

It most commonly features in flying safaris, usually in combination with other top camps in locations such as Meru and Maasai Mara.

We particularly like to connect the lodge by road with others camps in this region, as we feel it can give a greater sense of a journey and a deeper understanding of the place. For us the ultimate journey through this part of Laikipia starts at Lewa in the south and stays at Tassia Lodge, then here and finally further north at Sarara Camp. The great shame is that there's not many people out there who are willing to dedicate the 10 or more nights necessary to undertake that kind of journey.
