Segera Retreat

... is located in the Laikipia South area of north-central Kenya.

Set on a private ranch some 40km north-east of the town of Nanyuki, Segera Retreat is a very high-end lodge, owned by a very wealthy European businessman, Jochen Zeitz. It forms a centre-piece for his unique C4C vision of conservation for the region.

The lodge itself is contained within a heavily refurbished Colonial Era farmstead, with the converted stables housing a quirky bar and art installation. Further outbuildings contain a convention centre, more art displays, a gym and spa. Guest accommodation is in six sumptuous villas, raised up to take create views over the surrounding bush.

Activities are centred on vehicle safari, walking safari and bush meals in the local area, with horse-back safari, camel safari, hides and other activities in the pipeline.

The main potential downsides are the extremely high prices, the lack of a sense of wilderness due to the proximity of the heavily settled areas around Nanyuki and the relatively low wildlife densities. Some people may also find the whole museum and artwork side of things rather incongruous in a safari environment.
