is located in the Laikipia North
area of north-central Kenya
Laikipia North is an elevated plateau of arid range-lands which are renowned for their healthy climate. The area is home to a broad range of wildlife, including some of less familiar species which are characteristic of the area, notably including imperial zebras, gerenuks, reticulated giraffes and Somali ostriches. Visitor densities are very low.
Situated on the south bank of the Ewaso Ngiro River, Sosian is a majestic old cattle ranch, whose lands have now completely turned over to wildlife and the land largely rehabilitated.
The original house forms the centrepiece of the lodge and really is a classic of its type, replete with sweeping verandahs and, naturally, a full sized snooker table. The seven guest rooms are arranged in three units in the gardens to one side, with a pool area at the far end. The traditional back of house areas are equally interesting, being centred on an impressive kitchen garden.
Activities include vehicle safari by day and night, walking safari, hiking, horse-back safari and camel safari, overnight bivouac camping around the ranch, plus swimming, tennis and snooker back at base. There are also some interesting cultural activities involving the local Samburu people.
The main potential downsides are the fact that the greater area is largely reclaimed farmland, there is a significant amount of human habitation around, the wildlife densities are relatively low and off-road driving is not permitted.
