St Francis Bay

... is located around 75km east of Port Elizabeth in the Sunshine Coast West area of the Eastern Cape in South Africa.

This quiet, sleepy and upmarket coastal settlement is quite a contrast its rather brash neighbour, the surf capital of Jeffreys Bay.

Set along the eastern side of the peninsular, surrounded by nature reserves and wild beaches, the town has a distinctly unspoiled feel to it.

It is comprised of avenues of luxury holiday and retirement homes, most of them in traditional thatch, some lining a network of recently engineered waterways connected to a scenic river estuary.

The main potential downsides are that the village can experience very high visitor traffic during local holidays, the accommodation is largely aimed at the domestic market and there are relatively few activities in the immediate area.

The Sands ... is situated at the back of the main beach and is probably the most upmarket option in the area.

Sandals ... is more of a mid-range option, set a couple of rows back from the ocean.

We tend to most often include this area in trips as a single overnight for guests on self-drive trips who need to make the connection between the Garden Route and the airport at Port Elizabeth.
