is located at the western end of the Garden Route
, some 530km east of Cape Town
, in the Western Cape
of South Africa
Unlike the serene and relaxed beach atmosphere of the nearby Nature's Valley
, Storms River Mouth is a much harsher place, where river and surf do battle in the confines of a precipitous gorge, surrounded by steep forested hillsides.
The main reason to stop in this area it to undertake one of the multiple day coastal hikes listed below. It is also possible to do a rather cool day trip which crosses the bay by kayak before heading under the suspension bridge and heading up the narrow and extremely atmospheric defile of the Storm's River itself, transferring onto lilos for the last shallow stretches.
Although there is a fair amount of accommodation in the settlement of Storms River to the north, ultimately there are more attractive options in the adjacent Nature's Valley
area.Storms River Restcamp
... is a parks authority facility, the only accommodation actually at the river mouth.Otter Trail
... is a relatively hardcore five night hiking trail along the coast.Dolphin Trail
... is a much easier three night trail which overnights at lodges along the route.
