Swartberg and Prince Albert

... is located in Little Karoo East in the East of the Cape area of the Western Cape of South Africa.

North from Oudtshoorn and the Cango Caves, a spectacular gravel road leads through the magnificent Swartberg mountains and down into the Great Karoo.

At the top of the pass, a dead-end road winds 50km to the deserted settlement of Die Hell in the spectacularly remote Gamkaskloof Valley. As late as the 1950's around 20 Afrikaans families lived in almost total isolation, most having never seen the outside world. Nobody lives there now, but there are some very remote walking trails for self-sufficient hikers.

The pass heads down to the quaint village of Prince Albert, a time capsule of Victorian life, featuring an excellent fossil museum and some really decent and intimate lodge options.

Dennehof Guest House ... is a lovely family run guest-house, also alongside the main street to the south end of the village.
