Tamarind Camp

... also known as Kirurumu Tarangire Lodge, is located in the Tarangire area of Northern Tanzania.

+ reasonable lower cost option in the Tarangire area
+ pleasant traditional camp
+ well-appointed and serviced
+ relatively low price
+ very nice owners
+ private vehicles
+ good quality dry season game-viewing
+ superb elephant viewing Jun/Dec
+ guided walking in the area around the camp

- located outside the reserve
- repetitive journey back and forth into the reserve
- open to vehicles from all safari companies
- northern sectors can get busy during high seasons
- no off-road driving inside the reserve
- tsetse flies in some areas

Set outside quite close to the main entrance to the reserve, this camp is convenient to access but does not feel very remote.

Under the same ownership as Kirurumu Tented Camp in the Manyara area, this is a relatively high specification little place, well designed and serviced.

The tented mess and dining areas are reminiscent of a high quality mobile operation, whilst the seven guest rooms take the form of safari tents raised up on permanent bases and topped with thatch.

Due to its location, Tamarind Camp is probably best suited to single night stays, making it a reasonable first night option since it is only just over an hour by road from Arusha.

The usual stay duration is 1 to 2 nights.

Related lodges and locations ...

In this Tarangire National Park area we tend to most frequently recommend high quality camps deep inside the park such as Oliver's Camp, Swala Camp, Nomad Tarangire Kuro Camp or the mid-priced Mawe Ninga Camp.

The majority of visitors who do include the Tarangire area in their trip tend to combine with Serengeti safari, Ngorongoro safari and Lake Manyara safari to make a total of 7 to 14 nights in the region.

Some visitors also combine with options further afield including Kilimanjaro treks in the northeast of the country, Ruaha safari and Selous safari to the south, Katavi safari and Mahale Mountains chimpanzee safari out west, Maasai Mara safari over the border in Kenya and Virunga Mountains gorilla safari over in Rwanda.

These mainland areas are also commonly combined with nights down on the Tanzania Coast, especially on Zanzibar Island, Pemba Island, Mafia Island or Fanjove Island, usually in trips of 10 to 21 nights.
