AHA Thakadu River Camp

... is located in the Madikwe game reserve in the North of South Africa.

Upsides ...

AHA Thakadu River Camp is a decent lower priced option set in an excellent riverside position to the northeast of the main Madikwe Reserve. It has a total of twelve rooms, each with a private deck above the river. Children of all ages are welcome. The main activities here are vehicle safaris and modest walking safaris plus drives dedicated to younger children. Service levels are reasonably high. One of the better lower-cost, child-friendly, non-malarial safari lodge options in Africa.

Downsides ...

The main potential downsides for this property relate to the inherent weaknesses of the location, the lack of truly dramatic scenery and the potential difficulty in finding and viewing the wildlife. The lodge is possibly a little light on intimacy and character, it also operates shared safari activities.

When to visit ...

Madikwe has a similar climate to other safari areas in this region but, importantly, it gets a great deal less rain than Kruger, so can be a much more attractive during the key rainy season months of November to March ...

Apr/Oct ... is the long dry season in the reserve, the best time for wildlife viewing. Although it can get very cold at night in May/Jun/Jul and very hot and humid in October.

Nov/Mar ... is the long green season in Madikwe, when relatively light and sporadic rains freshen the landscapes, but can occasionally become prolonged. As the season progresses, the increase in grass and foliage cover can make wildlife viewing more of a challenge.

How we like to include AHA Thakadu River Camp in trips ...

Madikwe is the best non-malarial safari area in Africa and is therefore best suited to young children, pregnant women and older guests who are keen to avoid taking anti-malarial drugs.

But the reserve does falls short of many of the main malarial reserves in terms of scenery and wildlife, so we only tend to recommend it to those people who specifically need to stay clear of malarial areas.

AHA Thakadu River Camp is a good value option, we tend to recommend it most often to families with smaller children who are looking for a decent non-malarial safari whilst really trying to keep a lid on the budget.

The usual stay duration is 3 to 4 nights.

Madikwe is usually visited in combination with other non-malarial options, most commonly options in the Western Cape including maybe 4 to 6 nights in Cape Town and 1 to 3 nights in the Cape Winelands, amongst other locations.

It is also possible to combine it with non-malarial tropical beach options such as Mauritius or the Seychelles.
