are not usually associated with Africa, but they do live here year round, in the Western Cape, way off to the south.

The species that lives here are African or black-footed penguins, also know as 'jackass penguins', for the ridiculous braying call.

The best place to view them are Boulders Beach on the western side of the Cape Peninsular, which is accessible from any of the accommodations in the Cape Town area.

There is also another colony at Betty's Bay on the Hangklip Peninsular around 100km further east, which can be visited when taking the scenic coastal route from Cape Town to the whale-watching capital of Hermanus.
