Traditional sailing
Along the tropical shores of East Africa there is a great tradition for sailing in outrigger 'ngalawa' canoes, lanteen sailed 'dhows' and much larger ocean-going 'jahazis'.

It should be possible to go out on daytrips with expert local sailors and fishermen from virtually any beach lodge, especially those which have a focus on diving and other watersports. We would particularly recommend the east coast of Zanzibar, notably at Matemwe , where the tradition for local sailing is particularly strong. We have also encountered traditional sailing regattas on the island of Pemba a little further north and there are plenty of opportunities for sailing off the island of Mafia too.

Please do take responsibility for your own safety when organising such side trips as facilities such as emergency radios and flotation devices cannot be taken for granted.
