Snorkelling
is a method of swimming with a mask and breathing tube in order to be able to view what lies in the water below. The experience can be made easier by the use of flotation devices such as life rings.

On the whole the best locations for snorkelling are the similar to those for diving, which are covered in more detail in that section.

Snorkelling is generally considered to be best in shallow coral garden areas such as those experiences at Mnemba Atoll in the Matemwe area of Zanzibar Island and in the Chole Bay area of Mafia Island, both in Tanzania.

Another location of note is Chumbe Island offshore from Zanzibar where a marine reserve is dedicated to snorkelling only.

There are also noteworthy opportunities for snorkelling in Lake Malawi and Lake Tanganyika, where there are remarkable and diverse populations of cyclid fish.

In the icy waters of the Western Cape it is possible to snorkel amongst some very impressive kelp forests.
