The Lawns Hotel
is located in the Usambara Mountains
area in the northeast
region of Tanzania
Set in the town of Lushoto, this old hotel is something of an institution. When we first stayed there back in 1990 it was really run down, we distinctly remember a pack of about thirty local dogs chasing us off the lawns and into the hotel.
A recent inspection shows that although the old place has not changed enormously, it does seem to have shaped up a fair amount and is now much more serviceable.
The main reason to stay here is to break the long road journey between Dar es Salaam and Arusha. There are also some pleasant walking and mountain biking trails in the area and German visitors in particular may find some historic interest in the town itself.
The Lawns Hotel is certainly one of the more characterful lodges in the area, although not quite so appealling as Muller's Mountain Lodge
or as clean and shiny as Lushoto Executive Lodge
